CH Environmental Programs: Carbon Offsetting

What is your carbon footprint? This is a much more common commonly heard question today than ever as more ancarbon-footprint-greend more consumers and customers are becoming concerned with the ecological footprint that we, as organizations, are creating. However, many organizations do not really understand what contributes to a carbon footprint and more importantly how to measure it. A carbon footprint is essentially the green house gas (GHG) emissions or carbon dioxide that an organization creates through its manufacturing, operating and distribution processes. Organizations create carbon emissions through their consumption of electricity, their usage of heat and the operation of vehicles to name a few examples. Through readily available calculation techniques an organization can easily create a snapshot of its carbon footprint; however, for a completely robust carbon emissions figure an organization must complete a rigorous analysis of each carbon emitting process to create an accurate representation of its environmental impact. This process of measuring ones carbon footprint can also be brought down to the product level where the entire supply chain of product can be measured to understand the carbon footprint of an individual unit.

There are a multitude of firms which have entered this market space to offer consultative advice to organizations looking to better understand their impact on the environment as well as offering solutions and strategies to reduce these impacts. Crownhill Packaging has done just that in its partnership with Zerofootprint; through this partnership Crownhill packaging is able to leverage Zerofootprint’s unique expertise and programs to offer our customers carbon neutral products. To achieve a carbon neutral product Crownhill uses a program offered by Zerofootprint called carbon offsetting. The premise of this program is to first measure all of the carbon emissions associated with a particular product; at this point Zerofootprint is able to associate a carbon emission per unit which it measures in tonnes, and lastly a dollar amount is attributed to “offset” the carbon emitted by each product. Zerofootprint also brings to the table a number of green projects which it has become involved in such as reforestation programs, landfill gas recovery and tire recycling programs to name a few. Essentially the neutralization of the carbon emission occurs by paying the attributed fee per product to Zerofootprint which in turn allocates this carbon fee to the green project of your choice. Ultimately the customer is donating to a green project which is intended to reduce carbon dioxide effluents in an amount equal to the carbon emissions created by the product it sells, thus a carbon neutral product.

Crownhill Packaging has successfully implemented this program across a number of our product lines for a multitude of environmentally conscious customers. Please ask your Sales Representative about how you can incorporate this program into the goods and services that we currently provide you today.
